What We Do

The Wales Cancer Bank asks patients for permission to collect samples that are excess to diagnostic requirements. WCB will only access surplus tissue samples that the pathologist does not require for diagnostic purposes. Additional blood samples are requested but will be taken at the time of other blood samples whenever possible. Samples are processed and banked for future use in cancer related research.

Information on the samples, such as grade, stage and histological diagnosis is recorded along with some patient related data, such as gender and age at diagnosis. Treatment and outcome data are collected and molecular data is available for some samples. All samples are provided anonymously to researchers.

Cancer researchers worldwide can apply to WCB for access to samples and/or data. Researchers can be working in academia, the NHS, biotech companies or pharmaceutical companies. Many thousands of samples have been issued to research groups.
